The Microsoft Content Index is a search engine integrated into Windows 2000. Bartosz, who was on the Content Index design and implementation team, describes its requirement set, design principles, and technical details.

Figure 2: The resolution of the phrase query, "content index." The entries in the index contain words followed by lists of document numbers and positions. For instance, the word "content" occurred in document 5 twice, at offsets 14 and 28. Since the word "index" also occurred in document 5 at offset one larger than that of "content," we have a hit.
